THE people of Burnham-on-Sea are being encouraged to get involved with an event to promote safety at sea.

The RNLI volunteers from nearby Weston-Super-Mare have teamed up with the Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the local Coastguard Service to hold a sea safety day.

The event will be held at the lifeboat station at Knightstone on the Weston sea front on Saturday April 30.

This event, running from 10am until 3pm, will include demonstrations and talks on how to enjoy the seaside safely.

There will be the opportunity to see lifesaving equipment and if you are a boat owner have your own gear checked.

The Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service hovercraft, Firefly, will be there, as well as the Weston RNLI lifeboats and the Coastguard rescue equipment.

There will be the opportunity to throw wet sponges at the lifeboatmen.

All children are welcome and parents are encouraged to bring their youngsters to this event to help them learn how to keep safe.

Charlotte Conroy, lifeboat operations manager, said: "We are very keen to help show parents and their children how to enjoy our wonderful town and its seaside safely.

"The day will be fun for all but we hope it will also be a time to learn to respect the water."
