TV Licensing has reminded over 75s in Burnham & Highbridge they can claim a free TV licence.

The prompt comes as more than 460,0002 people across the UK celebrate their 75th birthday in the coming year and almost half a million people could potentially apply for a free TV Licence over the next 12 months.

With the winter months fast approaching, TV Licensing and Age UK are reminding those reaching this landmark birthday in the next 12 months that they are entitled to claim a free TV Licence for their main address.

Currently over 3,000 people in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge have an over 75 licence and over 4 million people across the UK are already enjoying the benefits of the concession.

Richard Chapman, spokesperson for TV Licensing in the South West, said: “If you’re approaching 75 or have already enjoyed your 75th birthday then it’s quick and easy to apply for your free TV Licence at tvlicensing.co.uk/over75info.

"Alternatively you can call our customer service centre on 0300 790 6073 and they will be able to help you through the application.

“It’s also important to remember the free licence is not granted automatically so anybody who becomes eligible needs to make sure they apply by calling 0300 790 6073.

"In addition, if you live with someone aged over 75, their free licence will cover all viewing in the property, meaning you could also benefit, whatever your age.”

Vanessa Norton, Older People’s Service Development Officer at Somerset Active Living, said: “Television is a great way to bring people together and can also prove a vital source of information and entertainment for many older people.

"This is especially the case now the weather is turning colder and a lot of older people will be staying home more.

"The free TV licence for Over 75s is a fantastic concession and I would urge everyone who is 75 or turning 75 soon to apply.

"It’s very easy to do and TV Licensing will automatically renew the licence for three years so you won’t have to think about it again for quite a while.”
