A WOMAN trapped under half of tonne of hay had to be rescued.

Burnham-on-Sea fire crews were called to a property on Portmease Drove in Axbridge at 2.22pm on December 1.

The 53-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries which were not thought to be life threatening.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called at 2.22pm on December 1 to the incident on Portmeade Drove in Axbridge. 

Fire crews from Burnham, Cheddar and Wells attended the incident. 

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 2.22pm to reports of a woman trapped under a hay bale in a remote location in Axbridge. 

"We were called by South West Ambulance Service.

"Three fire appliances were sent to the location on Portmeade Drove. 

"Upon arrival at the scene, fire crews cut open the square shaped hay bale on one side and use lines to lift the other half off the woman.

"It is believed that the hay bales were in a stack and that one had fallen off onto the woman. 

"A doctor attended as well as paramedics to carry out assessments on the casualty.

"The hay bale is believed to have weighed around half a tonne.

"The woman was able to stand after the incident but was taken to Musgrove Park hospital for assessment. 

"It is believed that her injuries were not life threatening."
