SUPERMARKET giant ALDI has submitted formal plans to build a new store in Highbridge.

The popular chain submitted plans to Sedgemoor District Council on December 29 2016 to build the new store with access and car parking facilities on empty land at the junction between Isleport Road and Bennett Road in Highbridge.

As reported in the Weekly News on November 16, the supermarket chain was optimistic for plans to go ahead to build the store.

A spokesperson for the store said it would create up to 40 new jobs and could lead to further businesses on the development.

Speaking to the Weekly news in November, a spokesman for ALDI said: "ALDI is delighted to confirm that we would like to open a neighbourhood discount food store in Highbridge, to give local people in Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea easier access to the popular ALDI offer.

"The proposed site is an undeveloped part of the Isleport Business Park, off Bennetts Road.

“Before progressing with a planning application, we will be distributing an information leaflet to local homes and asking local people for their views on the proposals.

“A new ALDI would create up to 40 new jobs and the contemporary, building would provide an attractive gateway to the wider estate, encouraging further investment and attracting more visitors for the benefit of new and existing businesses.

“ALDI would be Highbridge’s first discount food store, offering local people high quality products at low prices in a convenient location, so they don’t have to travel to Bridgwater or Weston-super-Mare to shop and save with ALDI."

Comments are welcome on the planning application until Feburary 10 and the plans will then be under consultation by Sedgemoor District Council.
