THE Friends of Burnham-on-Sea beach will be cleaning up the town's coastline again after huge success last month.

Organisers decided to arrange another beach clean, which starts today,  following on from the success of a cleaning effort from volunteers in February.

Mark Hollidge, organiser of the beach clean said: "The group has grown steadily and we had 21 volunteers last time.

"That is a very healthy turn-out but people fancying having a go for the first time would be very welcome, there is always work to be done.

"With such a large group we almost completely cleared the area from the entrance to Apex Park to the sailing club last time.

"However, high tides have brought in quite a deluge of fresh litter - most of it plastic items.

"It has become clear to me that the vast majority of the litter that lands on our shores is not the result of people dropping litter locally, it is mostly imported from other places. "

The beach clean will start at 10am today (March 11) and visitors are asked to meet at the entrance to Burnham sailing club near the mouth of the River Brue.

Equipment for the clean up will be provided but organisers advise volunteers to dress appropriately for what may well be rather muddy conditions.

For insurance reasons children under 5 years cannot participate but children above 5 years are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
