BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard is urging residents to take more care and keep their dogs on a lead after they were called to help a dog that had fallen off the edge of Brean Down.

The coastguard were called at 3.55pm on April 2 to help the stranded pooch.

It was also reported that a person was recovering the dog by climbing down the rocks.

Members of the public had called the fire service who also attended the scene.

When the coastguard arrived on the scene the person and the dog were no where to be seen and all units stood down.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team, said: "This is another reminder about keeping your dogs on a lead while on Brean Down.

"People always assume it will not happen to their well trained and obedient dog but sadly all to often we see it does.

"A nice sunny Sunday afternoon is great for a walk along the coast and up onto Brean Down and is very popular with people taking the dog for a walk.

"Unfortunately people forget to keep their four legged family member on a lead while on the Down and often this can lead to them falling off the edge, they don't always return in full working order."

If there is an emergency on the coast dial 99 and ask for the Coastguard.
