PLANS to build 17 new homes next to Tesco in Burnham-on-Sea have been backed by town councillors.

The proposals to develop the land to the west of Burnham's Tesco store on Ben Travers Way were discussed by members of the town council's planning applications committee who voted unanimously to back the reserved matters application.

An original planning application for the 17 homes was approved by Sedgemoor District Council in February 2014 despite objections from residents.

Several conditions were placed on the developer to protect the privacy and amenity of residents.

The developer, E G Carter & Co is seeking consent for reserved matters items on the project which include noise reduction, fire safety, layout, landscaping and drainage of the site.

Town councillors considered the project on April 18 and unanimously backed the project without further observations.

The project will be now be considered by Sedgemoor District Council.
