THE MAYOR of Burnham-on-Sea has said he will 'fight to the death' to ensure the dilapidated shelters on the town's South Esplanade are refurbished.

Cllr Michael Clarke spoke out at the annual town meeting at the Princess Theatre on April 22 and described the shelters as an 'eyesore'.

He said: "One battle that is yet to be fought is around the dilapidated shelters along the South Esplanade.

"They are a personal bug bear of mine and are such an eyesore at the moment.

"I would dearly love to see them renovated or replaced.

"It would help to give that end of the seafront a lift.

"I will fight to the death to get them restored just as the late councillor Neville Jones wanted. "

Cllr Clarke added that he will not take action on the issue while he is mayor to avoid distracting his attention from other work he has to do in the town.

His four year term as mayor is sent to end in May.
