BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard were called to the River Parrett after a boat had run aground.

The team were called at around 8pm yesterday (July 9) to assist Watchet Coastguard in moving the 25 ft vessel.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: "We had been asked to head along the river path as a precaution, the sail boat had been listing at 45 degrees, if it went over then a technical rescue would have to be initiated.

"As we were en-route we got comms from the Lifeboats that they had arrived and managed to quickly tow the vessel off the sand bank without any issues.

"Once it was back in deep enough water it was able to continue it's journey back to it's mooring at Burnham Yacht Club, escorted by one of the Lifeboats.

"Some of our Coastguard team met them at the pontoon to have a chat with them and ensure they were carrying all the right equipment and that they were ok.

"These were very experienced sailors on a well prepared vessel, they regularly sail in the area and were the victims of changing landscapes of the river and a strong wind that blew them marginally off course.and into the sandbank.

"They knew as soon as it happened they would need assistance and didn't hesitate to call it in.

"We always advise to call as soon as it happens as any delay could prove costly, and these guys were on the ball.

"With the quick response and expert work by the lifeboat crew this situation was resolved without any further problems and all that was injured was some pride.

"I'm sure their fellow members of the yacht club will be giving them some friendly banter for a while but the main thing is everyone is safe and well."

If you get into difficulty along the coast then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
