MEMBERS of Burnham-on-Sea Harriers running club rushed to the aid of a woman on the town's seafront after she fell ill.

The quick thinking members called the Coastguard for help at around 7pm on July 11 after they found the woman lying on a bench, close to hypothermia.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: "This is a classic example of how easy it is to get caught out by the weather.

"The person had been walking along the beach, got a bit muddy and very wet from the rain and was taking shelter from the conditions but due to being caught out by the rain they had become very cold and were on the verge of becoming hypothermic.

"The runners stopped and were talking to the woman to make her more alert.

"Residents had wrapped her in some blankets which really helped to stop her from falling into hypothermia."

When the Coastguard arrived they wrapped the woman up in a survival blanket and waited for an ambulance.

"Our team members kept her alert and as warm as possible.

"Once the ambulance arrived and we got the all clear she was transported back to our nice warm station.

"The ambulance crew monitored her further and once they were happy she was released back to her very relieved family who took her home..

"It was a great outcome to what could've been far worse, it was lucky that the running club were out and about and spotted her.

"Once again this shows what a fantastic community there is here in Burnham."

If you see anyone in danger call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
