A CLASS of year seven students wrote to a renowned author after being inspired by his book.

Pupils from King Alfred's School in Highbridge read a number of books on the topic of survival from authors and wrote a letter to Matt Lewis, author of Last Man Of, as part of an end of year assessment.

The students wrote a letter to the brave explorer telling him why they found his book inspiring.

One student, TJ Thomas, wrote: "I am currently learning how to play the guitar and hope one day to be in a successful band.

"I never thought I could achieve this dream of mine until I found out what happened to you and started studying your book.

"Now I believe that anything is possible."

Another student, Amy Badland, wrote: "I think that you are an amazing man because you kept pushing on even when you were in danger."

Mr Lewis, who was born in Nailsea, found himself shipwrecked in the middle of the Antarctic Ocean when he was just 23 and in his book he describes his ordeal and how he came to be rescued.

Miss Booth, English teacher at King Alfred's School said: "The students have loved hearing about Matt's survival story and have really taken on board his message to never give up hope.

"Being able to send their thoughts and emotions through to the author has given a sense of purpose to their writing.

"They are very much looking forward to receiving a reply to their letters."
