ALDI's bid for around the clock deliveries has been thrown out by councillors amid concerns residents will be kept awake at night.

The supermarket giant is building a new store at Isleport Business Park after plans were approved by Sedgemoor District Council on May 9, which is set to open in 2018.

Aldi requested permission to remove a planning condition which only allows deliveries to the store between the hours of 6am and 11pm.

The condition is in place to 'safeguard residents from noise and disturbance.'

But members of the town council's planning committee threw out the supermarket giant's bid saying it would 'upset' residents.

Cllr Louise Parkin said she 'thoroughly objected' to the proposal and said she felt the delivery times 'should be kept as they are'.

Cllr John Parkes said he agreed with Cllr Parkin and said he feels the council have to be 'consistent'.

Cllr Peter Burridge Clayton said: "I think it would upset residents and Travelodge visitors too."

Town councillors also expressed their concerns about Aldi's other planning application for a new totum sign saying they were worried that if the new sign is installed it could encourage other businesses on Bennett Road to follow in their footsteps.

Cllr Parkin said: "If there could just be one sign which had all of the Isleport Business Park businesses on it that would be better.

"I am concerned that other businesses will also want to install signs which would not look good."

Despite their concerns, councillors decided to support the application subject to the condition that it is an integrated sign.
