A GROUP of walkers sparked concern after a resident saw them in difficulty on the side of Brean Down.

Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard were called at around 9pm yesterday (August 24) by a resident who said they were concerned for the walkers safety after they spotted some torch lights on the south side of Brean Down.

As the crew were on their way to the scene the resident kept an eye on the torch lights for any changes.

On arrival, the resident showed the Coastguard where the lights were but the walkers had made their way to the top of the down.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: "This is a popular site for climbers and they can often be spotted at all times of the day.

"They knew the area and the access path once they get near the top, all were well equipped, happy and in no danger.

"The first informant did the right thing in calling.

"From their position it is easy to think someone is in difficulty and the person did the right thing in calling.

"As always it is better to be safe than sorry and we are happy to attend to ensure everything is okay.

"You guys are our eyes and ears out there and help keep our coastline safe with your vigilance."

If you see anyone in danger by the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguards.
