BURNHAM-on-Sea's Baptist Church was filled to the brim with comic book legends as more than 1,000 people attended the town's first ever Comic Con event.

Somerset's comic book fans dressed to impress as they donned cosplay's of their favourite characters including Superman, Batman and Captain America.

The Baptist Church on High Street was packed with comic book enthusiasts and first time Comic Con goers on August 19, who enjoyed playing on old arcade and video games, looking through large collections of comics and meeting some of the stars involved in their favourite shows.

The event was organised by Burnham resident, Jade Parkes, who has attended Comic Con events in London and Birmingham for the last five years and said she wanted to bring the event to the town.

"It was a fantastic day and it was great to see so many people come out in their costumes and get involved" she said.

"We had so many people turn up on the day in their costumes and it was great to see comic book fans and people who were new to Comic Con enjoy the day.

"We had people of all ages come to the event and it was great to see everyone having such a great time."

A number of special guests appeared at the event including UK Nugen, MK Garrison, Simon Fisher Becker and Paul Grist as well as fictional comic book characters Pikachu, Spiderman and Doctor Who.

Visitors had the chance to get their comics signed by their heroes as well as buy rare and limited edition comics and prints.

Jade said the event was such a big success that she has been inundated with requests to put on another event next year.

"We need to come down from the buzz from this year's festival and then start looking at another as it was such a successful day.

"It would be great to do another event next year. "
