KAYAKERS getting into difficulty at Brean Down was just one of five incidents coastguards in Burnham-on-Sea were called out to in just 24-hours.

Crews received five call-outs at the weekend, with the rescue of two kayakers among the most dramatic on Sunday, August 27.

The incident was reported after 18 hours on call and the team left their stand at Burnham Emergency Services to spring into action.

The crew arrived at the scene within minutes and found one kayaker had reached the Down and managed to drag his kayak to the top.

The other was being picked up Weston RNLI.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: “The point of Brean Down can be a dangerous place to be, especially in small craft such as these.

“The two tides from Weston and Burnham meet and creates a very rough and swirly patch of water that you do not want to get stuck in. They were lucky to get out safely.”

But just an hour later, the team were called out again to help two people who were struggling in waters off Brean beach.

The swimmers were having trouble getting back to shore after going out for a Bank Holiday Weekend swim.

Burnham RNLI and Weston RNLI were called to the scene and managed to drag them to safety by the time the Coastguard arrived.

The swimmers were then wrapped in blankets before being checked over by the RNLI.

Just when the crews thought they had finished for the day, another call came in at around 5pm from Watchet Coastguard who needed help in rescuing a number of people stuck in mud at the Blue Anchor in Minehead.

A spokesman for Burnham-onSea Coastguard said: “ It was a long stint but as always we will still be keeping an ear out for our pagers as we are ready to respond at anytime.

“It was a great team effort.”

The first report crews received over the weekend was to fears a member of the public became stuck in mud on Berrow Beach on Saturday, August 26.

But after scouring the beach with the RNLI, nobody could be found, apart from a dog who experienced difficulty on softer sand further up the beach.

The RNLI Lifeguard guided the dog back onto hard sand with his quad bike and the crew stood down. But it wasn’t long until crews were called again after a Second World War bomb had been found on Burnham beach on the same day.
