A BURNHAM-on-Sea woman who lost her grandmother to cancer has shaved off her long locks for charity.

Nicki Ward, a dispenser at Boots in the town, held a 'Brave the Shave' fundraiser at the store on August 29 to raise money for McMillan Cancer Research.

Hairdressers, Josh and Sophie from Unique Hair and Beauty, shaved off her locks to help her in her bid to raise money for the charity.

Nicki said she was inspired to go for the snip after her grandmother, Nanny Sally, died of cancer in 2010 and said the charity is close to her heart.

"My grandmother was cared for by McMillan nurses before she died, they were so supportive and I wanted to give something back," she said.

"I was also deprived of a grandfather due to this horrible disease - I never even got chance to meet him.

"We also lost our dear colleague, Pat Burrows in 2004 so this was very personal to me.

"It was lovely to have so much support from people."

After the shave, Nicki invited a group of supporters to the Dunstan Inn in Burnham so they could raise a glass to loved ones they lost as a result of the disease.

"The day went fantastically well, I have raised more than £1,000 so far which is amazing," Nicki added.

"We had some great raffle prizes which were kindly donated by friends and family.

"It was a great day."
