A FERAL goat that was stuck on cliffs at Brean Down has sadly died after falling off a cliff.

Two feral goats were discovered on the cliffs by representatives from the National Trust three weeks ago and were being looked after by the RSPCA.

But in a sad turn of events, representatives from the National Trust have confirmed that one of the goats became freed and the other died after falling from the cliff just a day before a RSPCA team was going to be dispatched to bring them to safety.

A spokesman for the National Trust said: "We have been working with the RSPCA for a number of weeks to try and rescue two feral goats who managed to get stuck on the Brean Down cliffs.

"The RSPCA have attended twice and were due to come back early next week to attempt a rescue.

"They last visited on August 29 to make a final assessment.

"Since then one goat has become freed but we are sad to learn that the other has since died.

"Due to the location of the goats and the height of the cliffs, the rescue operation was going to be difficult and therefore required careful planning and trained rope experts from the RSPCA to ensure the safety of all involved.

"This is an unusual situation for feral goats and we are all saddened of the outcome and that we were not able to rescue the goat in time."
