RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a woman died from serious injuries following an incident in Burnham-on-Sea.

A lane running beside Co-op in Berrow Road was taped off by police after officers were called to an incident at a property at 7.30am.

The death of the woman, who has not yet been named, has been described as “unexplained” by police.

Wendy Barnett, who lives in nearby Brent Road, said: "I am horrified about it. It will make me check my doors and windows and make sure I don't leave anything open. My thoughts and feelings are with the woman and her family"

Police made door to door enquiries this morning and crime scene investigators were seen in the area this morning.

A Berrow Road resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "I came out to walk my dog at about 7.30am and as I left the house there were six or seven police cars parked at the Co-op.

Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News:

"I didn't know what was going on. I spoke to other people who lived on the street and they said someone had died.

"People on the street who I've spoken to say they didn't hear any commotion. I had no idea anything had happened until I left the house. It was a shock. It's just very unfortunate for the family."

A Brent Road resident, who also withheld their name, heard a police helicopter circling this morning.

“I feel sad that this has happened. My thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” they said.

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of the woman at about 8.15am.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a woman with serious injuries at a property in Berrow Road in Burnham-on-Sea at about 7.30am.

"Efforts were made to revive the woman but sadly she died at about 8.15am

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

"A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody."
