ALL the birds and tortoises in an aviary survived a fire this afternoon (Wednesday).
Fire crews were called to the incident in Burnham Road, Highbridge, at 2.20pm.
A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "On arrival, the officer in charge confirmed a wooden aviary, approximately 5ft by 8ft, was issuing smoke.
"Crews got to work in breathing apparatus and used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire."
He said the aviary was ten per cent fire damaged and the the blaze started accidentally , probably from a heat lamp placed too close to the building.
He added: "The incident commander confirmed that the birds and tortoises within the aviary all survived the incident."
