BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard has warned residents to stay safe on the beach after they were called to rescue a man stuck in the mud.

Crews were called at 5.17pm today (May 19) to Burnham beach to assist the man who strayed too far and got stuck in the mud.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard, said: "When the tide goes out in Burnham on Sea it exposes mud flats which can be deep.

"There were concerns that he was with younger children who were watching from the jetty, and they may have joined him in the mud.

"Thankfully this wasn't the case and he was out before we arrived on scene.

"We issued some safety advice to them about how things can go wrong quickly and the consequences of when it does."

The coastguard is now urging residents to take care on the beach.

"We know that the sun is out and the water can look inviting to cool down in, but please remember to take care," the spokesman said.

"If the tide is out don't risk your safety to reach it.

"On this occasion they turned back, returned to the hard sand and continued to enjoy their day."
