A GROUP of people sparked safety fears after they ventured out past soft mud on Burnham-on-Sea beach.

Burnham Coastguard was called at 4.23pm today (May 20) following reports that a group of people had ventured out past the soft mud to the waters edge.

A member of the public had been watching the group for a while and was becoming increasingly concerned for their safety.

The crew went to the beach to help the group but luckily the group made their way back onto safe ground.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: "With the tide low and the temperature high it can seem like a good idea to dip your toes in the water.

"But if you have to cross wet sloppy mud to reach it then you should turn back immediately.
"The beach is very soft in lots of places at the moment and the mud patches are really prominent, always be aware of your surroundings and the dangers associated with it.

"If the tide is out do not follow it, instead just enjoy the beach, grab an ice-cream, or a nice stroll along the beach."

If you do see anyone in danger or difficulty then do as our caller did today, call 999 and ask for the Coastguards.
