A WEASEL had a lucky escape after a woman saved it from the clutches of her cat.

The young weasel was taken into Secret World Wildlife Rescue by the cat's owner for treatment after she found it in Weston-super-Mare.

The male weasel, named Ron by charity staff, had suffered a number of puncture wounds caused by the cat’s teeth.

As a result, animal carer Dan Bryant put it on a course of antibiotics to help them heal.

Dan said: “It’s not unusual for weasels to be caught by cats. However, this case is slightly surprising as cats normally go for weasels which are weak or injured as they’re easier to catch.

“Ron was fit and healthy before the cat caught him. I imagine he let his guard down and because he’s young, the cat managed to catch him. The cat must have been brave as weasels are very feisty.”

After the weasel has finished its course of antibiotics, it will stay at Secret World for a few days of rest and will then be released back into the wild.

Since 2011, the charity has rescued only 17 weasels.
