'If the water is looking rough, do not enter it or attempt to dodge the waves.'

That is the message from Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard after images surfaced of a young man wave dodging on Burnham beach.

The Coastguard posted a warning on social media yesterday (August 14) after a member of the public sent them a number of images of young man trying to dodge waves in rough conditions.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard, said entering water when conditions are rough can have 'deadly' consequences.

"These pictures were passed to us, it turns out they are a few years old but the message stays the same," the spokesman said.

"The tides are very high at the moment and the onshore winds are pushing them along creating rough conditions and heavy waves.

"It only takes a few inches of flowing water to take you off your feet, coupled with the larger and stronger waves which can easily knock you to the floor and the current will drag you out.

"The water temperature is cold and the body can quickly go into cold water shock leaving you unconscious and unable to fight against drowning.

"All these things may sound extreme but they can all happen in an instance. What may seem like harmless fun can quickly turn deadly."

The Coastguard also issued advice to residents urging them to stay out of the water if conditions are rough and stay safe when the tide is high.

"If the water is looking rough and the waves are hitting the wall, do not enter it or attempt to dodge the waves," the spokesman said.

"A wall of water hitting you can cause serious injury.

"While we appreciate the photos to highlight the dangerous act, we would rather be called and tasked.

"At the very least we could arrive, call them back and issue safety advice.

"If you see anyone wave dodging or are concerned for their safety, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately, every second is vital and could save their life."
