A MAN was taken to hospital and the A38 was closed for several hours after a car crashed into a streetlight in Highbridge. 

Emergency services were called to Bristol Road in Highbridge at around 5.10pm on Sunday (August 26) following reports of a crash. 

Onlookers said the driver of a Ford Focus lost control of their car and collided with a streetlight and a tree. 

A man was injured and he was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital for treatment.

His injuries are not thought to be serious. 

A resident who was at the scene said the man had a lucky escape. 

"It was amazing he wasn't dead, the impact of the crash had shattered his air bags," the resident said. 

"They had both blown, the streetlight had snapped in half but he had no visible cuts.

"He was lucky to not get hurt."

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service, said the service sent a number of resources to the incident.

"We were called on Sunday at around 5.10pm to attend a road traffic incident on Bristol Road in Highbridge.

"We sent various resources to the scene including: an ambulance, an air ambulance and a hazardous area response team.

"A male patient was transported by road ambulance to Musgrove Park Hospital for treatment.

"His injuries were not thought to be serious."
