TWO colourful characters, both on a local and national level, and a football related cartoon strip make up this week's voyage into yesteryear.

Today's offerings in our Weekly Memories - from the vaults of the Highbridge History Project - show former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, popular carnival figure Bob Millard, and a cartoon satirising a tie between Highbridge and Glastonbury.

Some of you are probably wondering what Winston Churchill has got to do with Burnham and Highbridge's past.

According to the history project, a local man was on the HMS Belfast at the same time as the legendary politician and managed to capture him on film.

Next we have a character many of our readers may recall from his involvement in the Highbridge and Burnham Carnival in the past - Bob Millard.

Born in Church Street in 1927, Bob was well known in the town for his fondness of cider and his donkey he named 'Bambi'.

He was also a member of the carnival club and a keen skittler and perhaps will be best remembered for his daisy upright bicycle, trilby hat and pipe.

And last but not least is this cartoon strip which appeared in a local paper and featured a series of sketches focusing on a football match between Highbridge Town and Drapers Glastonbury.

Take a closer look and maybe some of the drawings will mean something extra special to you.

In fact if you have any memories of Burnham and Highbridge you would like to share why not contact us and we can publish them right here.
