THERE were chaotic scenes in Burnham as the new Morrisons supermarket welcomed hundreds of customers on its first day of trading.
Scores of curious shoppers descended on the supermarket on Monday to snap up the opening day offers but according to one bargain-hunter, the store's 406-space car park was bursting at the seams.
Nicola Triggol from Burnham was stunned to see police called to the RNLI headquarters on Pier Street, just yards away from the supermarket, where an irate motorist had seen his car clamped.
According to Nicola, the car park was completely full by mid-morning so people were being forced to find alternative spaces - including the RNLI HQ.
She said: “There were two cars parked in front of the lifeboat station and a tow truck and one of them was being clamped.
“The owner of the car came out and wasn't happy and the police turned up a few minutes later.” Police confirmed they were called to the RNLI station but only to calm the situation down and said no further action was taken.
Nicola also said it was so busy inside the shop she could barely move and had to queue up for half an hour just for two bags of shopping.
A spokesman for Burnham RNLI added: “We ask people don't park in front of the station as it impedes emergency vehicles coming in and out.”
Morrisons said the store was 'bustling with shoppers' within minutes of opening.
Store manager Steve Pearson said: “We've had an amazing response from customers, and they have been a pleasure to serve. I would like to thank them and my colleagues for making the day such a success.”
