Civic award winners recognised

PROUD winners of the Burnham and Highbridge Civic Awards were honoured for their service to the community, in a ceremony on Sunday.

The fantastic four, Hazel Braund, Annette Haggett, Richard Mathews and Mike Young, attended a service in St Johns Church, along with dignitaries including Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Derick Cooper and MP David Heathcoat-Amory.

More than 200 people packed the aisles for the service, led by the mayor's chaplain Rev Robin Lodge, before a reception afterwards.

Hazel Braund was recognised for years of devoted service to the Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society as well as work for the League of Friends for Burnham Hospital, Burnham Area Evening Flower Club, The Macmillan Society for Cancer Relief and the Children's Society.

She told the Weekly News: “I felt very honoured to get this award - and I could not believe it when I picked it up.”

Richard Mathews was rewarded for his work with the Bay Centre, the Sedgemoor Association of Handicapped Persons and for his efforts with the Morland Hall in Highbridge - spearheading a campaign with the Weekly News to improve the building.

He said: “The service was conducted very well and I was extremely proud.

“It was a double celebration for the family last week, with the birth of our first granddaughter, Olivia Rose, making it extra special.”

Burnham Lions Club and rotary stalwart Mike Young was recognised for his volunteer work and service to the carnival clubs and committee.

Mike told the Weekly News: “The award came as a surprise, but I was very honoured.

“My wife and children were at the ceremony - it was a proud family moment.”

Annette Haggett's tireless efforts and outstanding performance with the Burnham and Cheddar Tourist Information Centre's, earned her the award.

She was even selected as the face of British Tourism Week in March this year.
