Kayak rescue at Brean

COASTGUARDS and a rescue hovercraft were called to Brean on Sunday afternoon, following concern for two kayakers seen out on the mudflats.

Beach warden Dave Furber raised the alarm at 1.55pm after spotting the pair, from Bristol, wading through knee-deep mud half a mile out, on a falling tide to reach the sea.

The Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft, operated by Burnham-based charity BARB, was called by coastguards to check on the pair's safety.

Graham Hallsworth, BARB deputy operations manager, told the Weekly News: “It was the pair's first kayaking trip to Brean and they were unaware of the potentially dangerous nature of the mudflats and fast-flowing tides.

“We were happy to check on their safety and escort them back to the beach.”
