THIEVES strike at churches in Sedgemoor around ten times a year, figures released to the Weekly News show.

Information released by the police under the Freedom of Information Act shows there were 34 thefts at churches in the district between April 2007 and October 2010.

The Weekly News has reported how St Mary’s Church in Berrow, St Andrew’s Church in Burnham and St John the Baptist Church in Pawlett were among those to have had lead stolen last year, and the police figures show there were eight lead thefts at the district’s churches over three years.

Other thefts include: six mountain bikes, three collecting boxes, cash (on six occasions), oil (twice), two handbags, a camera, a bag, a purse, two mobile phones, ID and a speaker cabinet.

Police said they could not disclose where each theft happened as that would jeopardise the churches’ security.
