HIGHBRIDGE Town’s visit to Porlock – the side likely to depose them as champions of the Taunton and District Saturday League first division – was one of several victims of the weather yesterday.

Heavy overnight rain on Friday waterlogged the pitch at Porlock, and the call came through on Saturday morning that the game was off.

Champions Highbridge had been expecting a stern examination against Porlock, who now lie second in the first division, one point behind leaders Predators, but with three games in hand.

Only one first division game went ahead, with Predators securing a crucial 4-2 win at Middlezoy, who slip from second to third.

The postponement means Highbridge still do not know when their last two league fixtures will be fulfilled.

They have no game scheduled this Saturday.

Whatever happens in the final two fixtures, it has been a thoroughly disappointing season for Highbridge.

Club secretary Terry Earl said: “There have been some good performances but we have had some terrible performances too.

“In the last month or so we haven’t played too badly but we have drawn lots of games, which last year we would have won.

“It’s hard to understand why, because we have basically got the same players, and we are still a good side, as we’ve shown on occasions.”

Highbridge could still turn their season around with better performances in the two cup competitions.

On March 12, they will host Keinton Mandeville in the quarter-final of the Somerset Junior Cup, but it is still unclear when the league knock-out cup will start.

The first round of matches was postponed in the freezing winter weather and they have not yet been rearranged.
