NEARLY 200 rugby players entered the record books on Saturday, by taking part in the world’s largest scrum in Burnham.

The event, in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, took place at the BASC Ground, and involved players from Burnham Rugby Club and others from across the country who were attending the Gulliver’s Travel Tournament.

In total, 191 people took part, smashing the previous record of 68.

Many of those taking part – including Burnham and Highbridge MP Tessa Munt - wore pink t-shirts, to highlight Breakthrough’s campaign called Julie’s Legacy.

The campaign was launched in memory of local Breakthrough member Julie Selway, of Westonzoyland, who died from cancer last year.

Burnham and Highbridge Mayor and Mayoress Michael and Maria Clarke also came to offer their support.

Organiser Christine Piper said: “The aim of the day was to raise awareness of our group and to have a bit of fun.

“It was a great day. We had been hoping for 200 people but several players were unavailable because they had been called up to the Somerset Saxons squad.

“However, we were still very pleased with the number of people who took part.”
