BURNHAM United A have pipped their rivals Berrow Reserves to the Division Three title in the Weston and District League, after grabbing all three points in Saturday’s local derby.

Berrow went into the clash needing only a draw to clinch the title, while Burnham needed a win.

Both teams started strongly but Burnham took the lead in astonishing fashion on 20 minutes.

Owen Jandrell fired a shot from the half-way line that flew into the top corner, giving Berrow keeper Ashley Harrison no chance.

In the second half, Berrow, with the wind behind them, put the Burnham backline under pressure, and equalised when a long-ball was played into the penalty area, and as keeper Graham Smith came out to challenge for the ball, it took a deflection off Burnham’s Wayne Croucher and went into the net.

Berrow continued to press and a shot from the left-hand side of the area hit the post and bar.

Burnham brought on the fresh legs of Tom Penfold, Harry Wedgewood-Potts and Alec Wilkins, which injected some pace into their play.

The crucial goal came from a move involving Graham Smith, Kieran Franklin, Aaron Hardwidge, and Mike Burnell, with the latter producing a pinpoint ball from the left to the edge of the six-yard box, where Tom Penfold slotted home.

Burnham A manager John Lane said: “This season has had its ups and down and I believe the squad deserves everything they have achieved.

“The team, assistant manager Nigel Jones and I, have learnt a lot and believe with such young talent at the club it is a bright future.

“I am so happy and proud of each and every one of them! We can now look forward to our cup final (against Yatton Athletic Reserves) on May 10”.

Berrow have the consolation of being promoted along with Burnham.
