A SPECIAL event is being held to thank supporters of Burnham Methodist Church's major makeover.

The Weekly News has reported how the church has undergone a series of improvements totalling around £200,000.

But parishioners were left devastated when freak rain storms in June 2009 forced a hole in the ceiling, allowing a torrent of rainwater to gush through into the main entrance.

It came just months after much of the revamp was carried out and on the weekend of the church's annual flower festival and its 130th birthday.

Two years on further work has now been completed, including the installation of a new frontage, new disabled toilets, and an overhaul of the College Street building's interior.

The second stage of the project, which is due to get underway in the coming months, will include raising the floor and breaking up the staircase, which runs straight up into sections to meet health and safety requirements.

The church also needs to raise money to pay for a brand new heating system.

Rosaline Anderson from the church said: “We have raised £100,000 so far, so the heating is our next major fundraising project but we will also be looking to apply for grants.”

A special afternoon tea party is taking place in the church hall on Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm to thank all those who have supported the project.
