A SEVERE blaze in Wellington that started earlier this afternoon is "essentially out", Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed.

Firefighters from across Somerset and Devon were called to Clifford Terrace just after 1.30pm after several members of the public alerted the brigade.

A woman has been taken to hospital as a result of the incident.

Firefighters found the property well alight with smoke billowing from the roof. A fire service spokesman said the blaze has also spread to the next building.

Crews from Wellington, Taunton, Bridgwater, Wiveliscombe and Cullompton are still on the scene making sure the fire hasn't spread to other areas or buildings, but a service spokesman confirmed that the fire is "essentially out".

Police are also on the scene to help with traffic management.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place tomorrow.
