Report by Mark Hollidge NEVER a dull moment at Fairfax Park as the Robins at last nailed down their first home win of the season.

Two late strikes from Wimborne’s Matt Kemble gave the false impression that this was a close contest but in reality the Robins should have won with plenty to spare. Coasting at 4-1 , with only five minutes left, the Robins seemed to lose focus and concentration and , although it would be harsh to say panic set in amongst the players, it probably did amongst the home fans.

The Robins had taken the game to their Dorset visitors from the off and visiting keeper Jason Harvell had to make three routine saves in the first 10 minutes. He had to work harder to clutch over his head a well directed header by Josh Turner following a pinpoint free kick from an Ollie Barnes.

The elusive Aaron Cornwall was enjoying running at a Wimborne defence who seemed reluctant to tackle him. Goals looked sure to come from this route but, against the run of play, Wimborne scored first after 35 minutes as Tom Jeffes glided unimpeded between two home defenders and accurately placed a low shot to the right of Sam Hutchings.

Town were level three minutes later. Danny Wring’s dribble took him deep into the penalty area. He drew the keeper to the left post and then chipped to the unmarked Cornwall who converted a simple chance at the far post.

Within another couple of minutes Wimborne were reduced to 10 onfield players after a stupid two footed challenge from Jamie Davidson saw him sent off with a flea in his ear. For once, nobody could argue about the referee’s decision.

Barnes was injured in the challenge and had to be substituted. Wimborne didn’t look much good with 11 players so with 10 they looked ready for the taking.

The Robins edged ahead on the hour. It looked fortuitous when the referee adjudged Matt Thorne to have been fouled in the penalty area. Thorne it was who accepted this gift happily and his spot-kick sent the keeper the wrong way.

The Robins were now well on top but Jeffes’ thumping volley on the turn stung Hutchings’ palms and soon after Max Cream forced Hutchings to plunge across his line to parry his low drive and the follow up from Cream was cleared off the line by Turner.

The home side’s third goal on 74 minutes seemed to settle the match’s outcome and it was the pick of the goals. Yet again Cornwall bamboozled the defence before laying the ball back neatly for Dave Pearse to finish emphatically from 10 metres.

Youngster Tom Hurley, eight minutes later, added to the scoreline – his shot striking a defender before entering the net. It was going in anyway. Kemble then rattled the Robins’ cage twice, after 87 and 89 minutes, with a powerful drive after running across the face of the penalty area and he converted a penalty following a foul by Andy Robertson.

Hutchings, Townley, Robertson, Barnes (Pitcher 46), Turner, Lyons, Thorne (Brimson 68), Wring, Cornwall, Mercieca (Hurley 75), Pearse.
