A YOUNG diabetic joined Burnham MP Tessa Munt in Parliament for a breakfast meeting.
Eight-year-old Mimi Astle, who has Type 1 Diabetes, was invited to a meeting as part of a visit by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) who is campaigning to find a cure for the disease.
They came to Parliament with 60 children and adults with the condition speaking with MP’s and raising the profile of the disease.
Tessa said: “I was blown away by Mimi’s strong, ‘can do’ spirit. She is an inspiration and a reminder of how important it is that a cure is found for this horrible disease. I would urge more people to support JDRF in their work.”
Type 1 diabetes is caused by a problem with the immune system. Unlike Type 2, it cannot be prevented by a good diet, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
The condition can lead to weight loss, tiredness, more frequent visits to the loo and a build up of ketones which are toxic to the body and can cause stomach pain.
