Burnham Library to close this month for refurbishment

LIBRARY users will soon be able to help themselves at Burnham’s library after it closes for a month for self-service technology to be fitted.

The building, which will be closed from September 26 for about four weeks, will be refurbished and will see new staff points, touch screen kiosks fitted and improvements to security.

The technology will allow customers to borrow, renew and return books and other items, as well as check reservations and pay charges.

It is hoped the kiosks will reduce queues at peak times and free up library staff to help with customer enquiries.

Councillor David Hall, cabinet member for libraries, said: “We have had really good feedback from users who have found self-service quick and easy to use and I’m sure this will be same in Burnham.

“Staff will, of course, be on hand to help people get to grips with the new kiosks. Once in place, self-service will allow staff to help visitors get the most out of their library.”

Library users need to bring their membership card and PIN (Personal Identification Number) to use the kiosks.

Anyone who doesn’t have a PIN, has forgotten it or wants to change it to something more memorable, can ask a member of staff or speak to a customer advisor on 0845 345 9177.

From September 27, while Burnham Library is closed, Highbridge Library will have extended hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9.30 am to 5.00 pm; Wednesday and Saturday 9.30 am to 1.00 pm.

Customers can also return and borrow items at any other Somerset or Libraries West Library. Items can be renewed online at www.librarieswest.org.uk or by speaking to a customer advisor on 0845 345 9177.
