A SUSPECTED knifeman was arrested following a massive police search in Highbridge last night (September 17).

Police were called to Marine Drive at around 8pm to a report of a man causing problems in the area.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Police officers tried to speak to him but he ran from police.

“A search of the area located the man and he was arrested in Brunel’s Way at around 9.40pm.”

The 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and possession of a knife blade or sharply pointed article.

Police used a helicopter with a spotlight to search areas, including Highbridge Railway Station where train services were stopped and the station was temporarily closed to allow police to investigate.

A taser was used at one point to try and restrain the suspect.

A resident who did not wish to be named said: “We heard police sirens and saw the police search helicopter come over the roof. A police car and an ambulance whizzed past. We had no idea what was going on.”
