A taste of the Caribbean... in Burnham!
PENSIONERS got a taste of the Caribbean this week – by holidaying in a Burnham church.
The annual Holiday at Home event, organised and hosted by Burnham Baptist Church, saw people aged over 60 enjoy a break all this week without the hassle and expense of going abroad.
Louise Whitrow, administrator at the Church, told the Weekly News: “The theme this year is Sail Away and we are welcoming people to come aboard daily for a range of activities including morning coffee, craft, entertainment and lunch.
“Yesterday we even had a coach trip, which this year was a ‘Mendip Meander’, followed by a cream tea.”
Jenny Williams, from Churchlands Court, Burnham, said: “It’s good that all the church denominations get a chance to be together, learning new activities in a happy and friendly environment.”
Eileen Wood, Worston Lane, Burnham, said: “This is a brilliant and worthwhile week. We come as strangers and leave as friends, long may it continue.
“We enjoyed watching the children from St Josephs School who came yesterday and showed us their country dancing - what a brilliant idea.”
Ros Anderson, from Abingdon Street, Burnham, said: “Holiday at Home gets me out of the house, have interesting conversations, and I don't have to cook!”
Teresa Chidgey, from West Huntspill, said: “It’s my only holiday, I don't go away. I came last year as well and had such a wonderful time that I told my friends about it and they have joined me this year. It's absolutely amazing and I’m enjoying myself just as much as I did last year.”
