DRINKERS polished off a staggering 14,000 pints and helped a forces charity at a festival.

Organisers of the Weston Real Ale Festival have handed over £5,000 to Royal Marines welfare charity Go Commando.

Punters got to choose from 70 ales and 30 ciders at the three-day event where proceeds were split between four charities and causes Weston Lions chooses.

Debbie Howarth, of Go Commando, said: “This is a truly amazing contribution from Weston Lions and we are really grateful to them.

“It comes at a good time as 40 Commando are currently deploying to Afghanistan|for a further six months and our support for the families is now more crucial than ever.

“The money will be put to good use for a project to construct a play area for children of Royal Marines families and refurbishment of the Families Centre at Norton Manor Camp.”
