Vote for Sarah to bag £10,000 for Burnham
2:01pm Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in News By Kirsty James
Sarah Milner-Simonds.
AN ORGANISER of Burnham’s Food and Dink Festival is appealing for people to vote for her in a competition to bag £10,000 for the town.
Sarah Milner-Simonds is one of just ten ‘green heroes’ selected for EDF Energy’s Team Green Britain community and needs as many votes as possible by Saturday morning (October 6) to be crowned champion.
The ‘green heroes’ have become ambassadors to encourage and inspire others to live in a more sustainable way and the winner will get a grant to support a suitable community initiative of their choice.
Sarah told the Weekly News: “Winning the competition would mean we could hold the Burnham Food and Drink Festival again and make sure it is free.
“Our aim is to bring the best fresh local food to people's doorsteps, so I'm planning to turn some forgotten corners of Burnham and Highbridge into fruit and vegetable gardens so people can have their own home-grown goodies whether they have their own garden on not.
“And for everyone that's ever wanted their own orchard, watch this space - it's cider with roses in the offing if we win.”
Sarah and her family grow their own vegetables, brew their own beer and collect seaweed from the shoreline to make organic fertilizer. Sarah also gives cookery classes using local produce.
Darren Towers, head of sustainability at EDF, said: “The Heroes Programme is our way of showcasing the great things people are doing to live more sustainable lifestyles in order to inspire others.”
