Charlotte Aldred and Lucy Westlake proudly show off their winning certificates from the regional First Aid competition

TWO members of the Highbridge and Burnham St John Ambulance Cadets have battled their way through to the national finals of the organisation's first aid competition.

Charlotte Aldred and Lucy Westlake, representing Somerset, won the South-West section of the competition after beating off teams from across the region.

The girls treated a casualty with severe bleeding as well as fractures and burns in individual and team categories at the competition, held in Taunton. They finished 50 points clear of second-placed Devon.

Sarah Westlake, divisional Supt from Highbridge St John Ambulance Cadets, said: "Everyone at Highbridge and Burnham St John Cadets is very proud of the girls.

"This is the first time a team from the local cadet division has reached the national finals.

"The girls have trained hard over many years to attain such a high standard and would especially like to thank Colin Rawlinson, who has been their chief trainer since they first started entering competitions."

Charlotte and Lucy will now go to London in July to compete against teams from across the UK in the national finals.
