Highbridge fire latest: Owner "determined" to rebuild historic hotel site

Firefighters tackle the flames from the hotel fire last night

THE owner of the former Highbridge Hotel has said he plans to rebuild the historic building - despite the devastating damage caused by a huge blaze yesterday (Tuesday).

Investigations have started into the cause of a major blaze at the landmark Highbridge Hotel, a 250-year old former coaching in, on Tuesday night.

The listed property is owned by Mead Realisations, headed by dairy farmer Derek Mead.

Derek Mead told the Weekly News: "The Highbridge Hotel has been a part of the townscape and part of the town's history for centuries, and our intention has always been to turn it back into the social centre for the community which it once was."

"We shan't be able to get in and inspect the extent of the damage until the fire service tell us it is safe to do so but, disappointingly, it looks as though some of the historic internal features may be beyond saving.

"But we are determined to do everything in our power to save and reinstate a building which has played such a pivotal role in the life of Highbridge for so long."
