Tensions show at public meeting for Highbridge Hotel
 |
| Derek Mead and Joe Leach faced questions from the public in a meeting chaired by Phil New. LibDem parliamentary candidate Tessa Munt was also in attendance |
A TENSE public meeting was held last week in Highbridge where about 50 people attended to ask Highbridge Hotel owner Derek Mead whether the building had been properly secured before the fire - and about his plans for the site.
Cllr Joe Leach, leader of the LibDems in Sedgemoor, told the meeting he believed that security was inadequate.
But Mr Mead defended the security of the hotel and pledged to rebuild the landmark.
He said: "I hear what the councillor is saying, but all the boards were up in place - the firemen had a job to get in there because the building was so securely done up.
"If those who had broken in before had been properly locked up, this would not have happened."
The developer then revealed he was aiming to unveil plans for the site to the people of Highbridge at the town's community centre in the coming months.
He said: "We have instructed architects to come up with plans for the scheme and in the next few months you will be invited back here to see the plans."
