THE Burnham branch of the British Legion could be saved after people have come forward who want to try and keep it going.

Vice-chairman Tony Moore told the Weekly News that despite calling members together to try and save the branch the decision was regrettably made to close it at the committee’s last AGM.

The branch had been running for 75 years but unfortunately there were not enough people who could commit to forming a new committee which needs at least five active members to run it.

However many people have expressed sadness on online forums saying they believe it could be re-started at a different venue, such as the BAY Centre.

Mr Moore said it was a lovely idea and something he would like to see but wondered whether it could really happen.

He said: “I am pleased that there has been an emotional response to the branch closing after 75 years. I feel very emotional about it myself. I have heard some rumours that it could be re-started at the Bay Centre which would be lovely if it happened. As far as I’m concerned it is a sad day for me as I handed the keys over for the building in Victoria Street which will almost certainly be sold.

“I went there today for the last time to pick up the post and I found a letter from a lady in Taunton which enclosed a small cheque to try and keep the branch going which was very nice.

“I really hope something can happen to bring it back but we’ll have to see what happens.”
