THE weather proved a real blow for kite-lovers over the weekend when the calm conditions grounded hopes of a flying festival in Burnham.

People turned up with their kites on the seafront but only a few took flight with a bit of help from a fishing rod, due to a lack of wind.

Organisers said it was very disappointing as the weather forecast had suggested seaside gusts of Force 3-4.

It is hoped the event can be held next year.

BOSH organiser Gaynor Brown said: “Burnham can normally been relied on for wind but the one day you need it, it doesn’t come.

“We did manage to get a couple up with the help of a fishing rod flicking it into the air.

Bristol has run kite events but they’re not in the right place, really.

Being on the channel is normally perfect for this.

“We just need to get things organised for next year.

I think if we held it next October half-term and try and get sponsorship from some of the holiday parks it could be a major event for the town and really help fill up B&Bs in what is normally a quiet time.”
