DEVON & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is looking for people with a commitment to the community, a positive attitude and a good level of fitness to attend an open evening at Burnham Fire Station.

Station Commander Ian Hazelton said: “It is really important that people from our community come forward to make sure the fire appliance is available to attend emergency incidents as often as possible.”

The fire service say it is an opportunity for men and women who live or work within five minutes response time to the station to potentially save lives in fire, flood and road traffic emergencies.

The crew are looking for at least four extra firefighters to bring the team up to the full establishment of 22 with the service already having employees in factories, shops, takeaways and restaurants as on-call firefighters.

Mr Hazelton added: “We are particularly looking for people who can give cover during the daytime, Monday to Friday, but they don’t have to be available all the time as we can be flexible around when people are free.”

Burnham Fire Station is hosting an open evening for prospective on-call firefighters on Wednesday (October 22) at 7pm.
