KING Alfred School has become the first school in Somerset to appoint Cultural Champions to show students a real insight into the variety of cultures in the UK.

Cultural Champions is a new scheme designed to give students and adults an authentic, personal view of their other backgrounds, cultures and people that live in the county, broadening their minds and breaking down barriers.

Ten students aged from 11 to 18 from The King Alfred School will now join three ten-year-olds from Churchfields Primary School, two eight-year-olds from Westover Green Primary in Bridgwater, and one 11-year-old from Berrow Primary School to launch the new scheme.

The scheme is run by Somerset County Council.

Alison Jacobson, head of RE, said: “We are delighted to be the first school to embrace this exciting new scheme.

“As a country we have a wide variety of different cultures and each one brings something extra to our society and enriches the lives of everyone.

“All the students involved have different cultural influences in their lives and they will be sharing that with others in the school, local primary schools, governors meetings and in the local community.”
