A NEW road safety campaign has been launched urging road-users in the South-West to ‘look out for each other’.

Road safety charity Brake is calling on all drivers to protect pedestrians and cyclists by slowing down to 20mph in communities, looking longer and taking it slow at junctions and bends, giving people room and consideration.

Recent figures released to support the ‘look out for each other’ campaign show 75,421 fixed penalty notices were issued for careless driving and speeding offences in the South-West in 2013.

Statistics also show 190 people were killed and 1,795 seriously injured in the region last year.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: “When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness.”
