THE fire service is warning people to take care when using tumble dryers.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service says it responded to 23 property fires caused by tumble dryers in the last year and expects use of the dryers to increase during the cold and wet winter weather.
Graham Rooke, station manager from North Devon, said: “It is important that filters are regularly checked and cleaned to ensure they do not become blocked.
"A build-up of fluff and lint inside the machine is a major fire risk.
"Machines should not be overloaded with clothes and the manufacturers’ instructions for use, including the maintenance, should be followed.”
